New Mathways • What you need to know

HCC Mathways Project is a systemic approach to improving student success and completion rates through implementation of processes, strategies, and structures built around accelerated mathematics pathways and a supporting student success course, connected to modern programs of study.

Depending on placement testing, MATH 0106 may be required before you can embark on the Mathways outlined below. There may be some variations to these Mathways. Please consult your specific degree plan.

Math courses

List of math courses and course descriptions

Math 0106: Basic Mathematics
Topics include fundamental operations fractions and decimals, percents, ratios, and proportions. All students who enroll in this course are expected to complete MATH 0409 in the following consecutive semester before attempting either MATH 0312 or MATH 1332.

Math 0309: Introductory Algebra
Topics include real numbers, introduction to Logic, polynomials, basic factoring, linear equations, linear models, percentage models, order of operations, set operations, and an introduction to other topics which may include linear and quadratic modeling and math for financial management. A departmental final examination must be passed with a score of 60% or more in order to pass the course.

Math 0310: Basic Concepts for Business Math and Statistics
Topics include real numbers, order of operations, proportions and percent, percent of increase/decrease, simple interest, introduction to probability and statistics, integer exponents, polynomials, linear equations and inequalities in one variable, linear equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations, matrices, linear functions and an introduction to other which may include exponential, quadratic functions, quadratic equations, and set operations. A departmental final examination must be passed with a score of 60% or more in order to pass the course.

Math 0314 Intermediate Algebra
Topics include factoring techniques, radicals, algebraic fractions, absolute values, complex numbers, graphing linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, systems of equations, graphing quadratic equations and an introduction to functions. Emphasis is placed on algebraic techniques needed in order to successfully complete Math 1314: College Algebra. A Departmental Final examination must be passed with a score of 60% or more in order to pass this course.

Math 1314: College Algebra
Topics include quadratics, polynomial, rational, logarithmic and exponential functions, system of equations, progression, sequences and series, matrices and determinants. A departmental final examination will be given in this course. Core Curriculum Course.

Math 1324: Finite Mathematics
A survey of finite mathematics and its application to problems of business and the natural and social sciences. Topics include set theory, probability, an introduction to matrices, linear programming, and an introduction to statistics. Core Curriculum Course.

Math 1332: Liberal Arts Mathematics
Mathematics for Liberal Arts is a course designed for liberal and fine arts, non-mathematics, non-science, and non-business majors. The course provides students with an appreciation of the history, art, and beauty of mathematics in the world around us. Topics include an examination of sets with applications, probability, and statistics, financial management, mathematical modeling, and fundamentals of geometry and its application. Core Curriculum Course.

Math 1342: Statistics
Topics include histograms, probability, binomial and normal distributions and their applications, correlation and prediction, and tests of statistical hypotheses. Core Curriculum Course. Students who have completed MATH 1342 successfully should NOT take MATH 1442. Students will Not receive credit for both MATH 1342 and MATH 1442. Core curriculum course.
