HCC students and faculty take guided tour of Genome Center at Baylor College of Medicine

Students and faculty from the HCC Central and the HCC NW STEM clubs joined forces for a field trip to Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center on March 27.

The students received a guided tour of the laboratories at the Genome Center at Baylor, one of the six worldwide centers involved in the human genome project. The students saw first-hand the dramatic advances in sequencing technologies over the past decade and gained a deeper appreciation of how more efficient and cheaper genome sequencing will impact several fields, including revolutionizing the way we detect, treat and prevent diseases to understand human evolution.

The students also toured the DeBakey Museum at Baylor named in honor of Dr. Michael DeBakey, the father of modern day cardiovascular surgery, a compassionate and tireless surgeon and educator who pioneered several important medical breakthroughs in the 20th century including the use of the left ventricular bypass pump and telemedicine. The tour was organized by Dr. Pauline Ward, Faculty at Biology & Physical Sciences, HCC Central College.
