The Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature recognized Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., for his significant contributions to higher education and workforce development.

Dr. Maldonado was greeted by lawmakers on the Senate floor during a session last week after a resolution (S.R. 661) was approved. The resolution identified Dr. Maldonado’s success in fostering an inclusive, supportive culture for students and staff, while boosting academic achievement and restructuring HCC to increase the number of graduates and improve the scholastic performance of first-year students.

The resolution – by Texas Senators Borris Miles, Carol Alvarado, and John Whitmire – noted the chancellor’s work to establish successful academic partnerships, which allow graduating students to seamlessly transfer to four-year institutions.

Dr. Maldonado was praised for ensuring fiscal stability, including substantial debt reduction, and strengthening of reserves for the college, as it expanded to 19 campuses and facilities. The resolution also cited some of the chancellor’s other achievements, including leading HCC through challenges such as Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am deeply humbled and grateful for this honor,” Dr. Maldonado said. “The work we have done in partnership with the Texas Legislature is allowing community colleges like HCC to provide life-changing educational opportunities for students.”

Chancellor Maldonado entered his 10th year of service at HCC in May. He concludes his tenure at HCC in August.
