Houston Community College joins SHRM Foundation’s HR Registered Apprenticeship Program

The Houston Community College (HCC) Office of Work-Based Learning and Industry Partnerships has joined the SHRM Foundation’s HR Registered Apprenticeship Program (HR RAP) as an educational provider and HR Houston to expand the HR talent pool while building a more skilled, diverse workforce to elevate the role of human resources.

With support from the U.S. Department of Labor, the SHRM Foundation developed and launched the HR RAP in February 2021 to help individuals enter the HR field. The program, which comes amid increasing interest in registered apprenticeships and their proven success in meeting the needs of employers, will help develop the next generation of diverse HR professionals. The HR RAP allows individuals to earn wages while receiving on-the-job learning and supplemental education to successfully fill today’s high-skilled, in-demand HR specialist positions.

“Registered apprenticeship programs are a proof point that demonstrates an employer’s commitment to investing in its staff and organization at large. By bringing new talent into the HR profession, it shows a commitment to HR, professional development and building a diverse, inclusive workplace,” said Wendi Safstrom, executive director of the SHRM Foundation. “The SHRM Foundation is thrilled to work with the HCC Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship Hub to cultivate a new generation of diverse HR professionals with the skills and resources needed to support, manage and lead in the 21st century workplace.”

The SHRM Foundation’s HR RAP leverages SHRM’s signature educational programming, aligned to its competency model and credentials, to cultivate and equip HR leaders to manage and lead with innovation and insight. Upon completion of the program, apprentices will be prepared and eligible to take the exam for the SHRM Certified Professional credential.
