HCC introduces daylong electric, hybrid vehicle safety training for technicians

Autonomous, hybrid and electric vehicles are transforming the challenges faced by traditional mechanics and technicians and increasingly require updated skills.

To address the need, the HCC Transportation Center of Excellence (COE) recently introduced an eight-hour safety and fundamentals course that equips professionals with the knowledge required for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining these advanced vehicles.

Electric and hybrid vehicles and equipment are used to provide firsthand instruction so that technicians learn industry trends, vehicle types, charging technology and safety protocols.

“As more electric, hybrid, and autonomous vehicles are purchased for personal use and commercial use, our training helps existing and new automotive repair professionals safely maintain and repair these vehicles,” said David Vogel, dean of the Transportation COE. “Trained people are going to be more and more in demand at local repair outlets, dealerships and shops that serve company fleets.”

The training emphasizes the importance of using appropriate protective gear, insulated tools and testing meters, and other safety procedures.

An inaugural class of CarMax Inc. automotive technicians recently took advantage of the training at the HCC North Forest Campus – Automotive Training Center. Participants gained valuable insights into the precautions and potential risks associated with high-voltage components, organizers said.
