The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is a national honor society of high-achieving students who provide service to their communities.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honors society that recognizes students for their academic success. In order to become a member you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; have completed 12 transferable courses with HCC and be registered during the semester you join Phi Theta Kappa. We have a membership drive in the Fall and Spring semesters during the academic year. Phi Theta Kappa allows students access to scholarships at four-year institutions. Most colleges provide transfer scholarship money specifically for Phi Theta Kappa members. Phi Theta Kappa gives members the opportunity to develop careers, participate in the community, and learn a great deal about specialty subjects.

The Honors College Club is comprised of 50 Honors College students every year. Once admitted to the Honors College, students become members of the Honors College Club. The club is very active. For the past five years, it has hosted a fall and spring lecture series. It has sponsored the college's recycling efforts and supplied the recycling containers for each building, among other things.

Beta Beta Beta (Tri Beta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study. The three major objectives of the Society are:

1. To promote scholarship in the biological sciences
2. To promote the dissemination of biological knowledge
3. To encourage research

 

 The Sigma-Chi chapter of Beta Beta Beta also dedicates itself and its members to participate in activities which benefit the community.

Sigma-Chi strives to offer opportunities to expand the knowledge of biology in the HCC student population as well as the community at large. Tri-Beta seeks to offer extra biological hands-on activities for its members, community service opportunities that are geared toward the dissemination of biological knowledge, and to create a community for the exchange of biological ideas.

As a national honor society, Tri-Beta offers students the prestige of acknowledgment for the hard work they put into their biological studies. Membership in this society will give the student extra recognition of the quality of dedication to the study of the biological sciences that will be acknowledged by universities.

Join bbb... National Biological Honors Society – Sigma Chi Chapter- HCC Biology Club

Requirements:

• Completion of 2 Biology Classes (1 of which must be taken at HCCS) with a 3.0 or higher
• Overall GPA 2.75 or higher
• Be in good academic Standing

 

Meetings:

• Monthly Meetings- twice a month
• An Induction Ceremony once per semester
• Special Meetings for the planning of activities and events as required

Northwest STEM Club is located on Spring Branch Campus. The goal is to promote student engagement, stimulate and provide enrichment opportunities for students to apply knowledge outside of the classroom, give students the opportunities to further and perhaps deeper exploration of STEM disciplines as a field of study or career option. In the past, the club has organized seminars, biotechnology workshops, and research symposia.

The Council of the American Chemical Society (ACS) recognized the formation of HCC NW Chapter of Student Affiliates in 2005. The group was developed for undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about the chemical sciences. The student members have the opportunity to build organizational, leadership and professional skills with the assistance of a faculty mentor. The students also have a chance to explore Chemical and Engineering News (CEN) online and CEN-Chemjobs.org. The ACS also publishes an annual directory of experience opportunities that lists co-ops, internships, and summer work opportunities. The members enjoy the various social events, field trips, and receive the ever so popular blanket as a welcome gift!

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honors society for two-year institutions. There are over 1250 chapters. The Houston Community College Chapter is Omega Sigma. Qualifications for membership are based on a GPA of 3.5 or higher and the completion of 12 college-level credits with Houston Community College. In addition, you must be registered during the semester to join the organization. Phi Theta Kappa is committed to scholarship first, leadership and service. We also foster fellowship. Phi Theta Kappa encourages research in serious topics as well as an action plan for chapters to develop a project that furthers the research. Membership provides access to scholarships and professional and personal development. Omega Sigma holds monthly meetings on the first Friday of the month, 7 p.m., at the West Loop Campus.

Southwest Science Interest Group was started in 2008 at Stafford Campus.
The goal of the club is to organize events and activities for students interested in sciences.
In the past, they have hosted microscope technology open houses, transfer and career presentations, and seminars on the NASA program.

Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, "is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students."

The HCC chapter of Mu Alpha Theta achieves these goals by:

• Providing recognition and encouragement to those students who enjoy and excel in mathematics.

HCC Chapter Qualifications:

• Completion of College Algebra.
• Minimum overall 3.25 GPA for all stem related mathematics classes above college algebra.
• Recommendation of an HCC mathematics college instructor.
• Participation in Mu Alpha Theta monthly meetings, and related fall and spring activities.
