Health Care Career Academy


Students will explore and determine their personal fit to various occupations within the health care industry and create a health career educational plan to achieve their professional goals. All learning and skill developments will be completed in preparation for entry-level employment and completion of a health career program leading to certification, licensure, and/or degree.

What You Need to Apply

Recommended Courses - Conditional acceptance based on completion of the following:

  • INRW 0420 or HPRS 1271
  • MATH 0409 or TECM 1303

Exempt if placement test scores or transcript indicate college-level reading, writing and math.


All applicants are required to attend a Program Session, which is held at HCC Coleman:

Submit an application packet to HCC Coleman - Student Services.

Items that need to be submitted include:

  • Application for Health Sciences Program - Typed and printed
  • Proof of Program Session attendance
  • Official high school transcript or GED scores.  Due to program accreditation, an official high school transcript must be submitted regardless of completion of bachelor’s or master’s degree(s)
  • Official college transcript showing completion of required courses (unofficial from HCC is acceptable)

Be patient. it can take several weeks for admission applications to be processed.


A condition of admission is based on completion and/or submission of the following:

  • Proof of personal health insurance
  • Passing drug screening
  • Physical examination
  • Immunization record showing: Completion of Hepatitis B Immunization series (may take up to 6 months), MMR, Tdap, TB, Varicella, Meningitis (required for students under the age of 22), and Influenza (please note: a titer may be required for some of these immunizations)
  • Cleared Criminal Background
  • Attend Program Survival Camp
  • Attend Student Services Orientation

Patient Care Technician


The Patient Care Technician Occupational Skills Award (OSA) is designed for individuals interested in caring for patients in multiple health care settings. Completers of this award are eligible to work in an entry-level position alongside health care professionals under the supervision of a registered nurse, a Licensed Vocational Nurse, or those in health care supervisory roles.

Note that a student may only earn one Occupational Skills Award (OSA) per academic year.

Phlebotomy Technician


The Phlebotomy Technician Occupational Skills Award (OSA) is designed to develop skills in a variety of blood collection techniques such as vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles, blood cultures and specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection control, specimen labeling, handling, processing and accessioning. Additional topics include professionalism, ethics and medical terminology. Completers of this award are eligible to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification exam and work in entry-level phlebotomy positions in hospitals and doctor offices.


The median salary for Phlebotomy Technicians in the Greater Houston Area is $30,000.

Sterile Processing Technician


The Sterile Processing Technician Occupational Skills Award (OSA) is designed for individuals interested in processing surgical instrumentation. The completer of this award will be eligible to work in an entrylevel position alongside health care professionals with supervision in a surgical instrumentation central processing department.


The median salary for Sterile Processing Technicians in the Greater Houston Area is $32,000
